Situation

Berg Propulsion offers remote monitoring and analytics for vessel performance in real time. Data on propulsion status, energy use and equipment condition is collected on board, sent ashore over secure communication links, and analysed in the cloud to spot trends, detect anomalies early and plan maintenance before something breaks.

The Data Logger is the onboard piece that makes this possible: it records the vessel's operational data and transmits it remotely. As demand grew, the logger's software, production, hardware and service workflows all had to keep up.

Task

Make the Data Logger faster to deliver and more reliable in the field: improve the application's performance and scalability, move it to a new platform, and make it straightforward for the production and service teams to build, install and support.

Action

  • Platform upgrade: moved the Data Logger to a Linux platform and improved the application code for performance, reliability and scalability.
  • Quality built in: added checks and automated tests so every release is verified before it ships.
  • Production and service: documented streamlined processes for the development, production and service teams, including troubleshooting and integration guidance on board.
  • Future-proofing: wrote procedures for porting the application to other hardware platforms.
  • Field feedback: monitored the updated release on real vessels to guide further improvements.

Result

  • Faster, more efficient handling of new orders after the platform upgrade.
  • Fewer errors and better reliability thanks to the added checks and automated tests.
  • In use across multiple vessels, feeding the data behind remote diagnostics, efficiency analysis and fleet benchmarking.
  • Easier to port and scale as new hardware platforms come along.
